I took a position at a new company this week and so far it has been a good experience. There were several reasons I took the job but one of the biggest is the fact that I will be working on a massive application and not smaller ones. I wanted to learn the skills for this type of development, as well as some new design patterns.

I am still going to be doing interactive work but mostly freelance stuff. I want to start posting some of my learning’s here so you all can gain the knowledge I am.

Until next time.

Let me tell you about an issue I have had with the Adobe Media Encoder. I have to encode a lot of videos for clients at work and I have been using Adobe Media Encoder for the job, but one day it just stopped working. Well I shouldn’t say stopped working it just stopped importing .mov’s into the Media Encode and Premiere.

I tried Googling it but to no avail and then today it hit me what the problem might be. I knew that in the past I had to change the codec to QT settings and thought I would try that. That is when I found the issue.

There was recently an update to the Quicktime player on my machine. I did not think anything about it, I just thought it was just another update. Now, I’m not sure if it reinstalled it or I didn’t check the right box but when I went to try to play a .mov in QT it had to re-install itself. After it re-installed the settings for my codec was there and I was able to import .mov’s again into Adobe Media Encoder and Premiere.

So if you are having trouble importing .mov’s into Adobe Media Encoder or Premiere then try updating to the newest version of QuickTime or installing it period.

I hope this helps some of you.

I always like to support all the groups and organizations in my local area and here is a great one called Refresh Indy.I’m putting up an email sent to me from Justin Harter about the next meeting and location. Please come out and support the local groups.

“Hello Everyone!

Next month will mark an important milestone for Refresh: we’re turning 1 year old! For a lot of meetups that meet once or twice and fizzle out, this is an astonishing achievement. I’m happy to have continued support from many of you.

So, to celebrate we’re shaking things up next month and we’re moving from our regular meeting location at the RAM to a couple blocks over to Jillian’s. Refreshers Aaron Dudenhofer and Kevin Finney have recently completed work on the Jillian’s website (http://jilliansindianapolis.com) and because of their hard work, their contact at Jillian’s has graciously extended us their High Life Lounge for no charge on Wednesday November 4, 2009 from 7 to 10 pm.

Everyone can order food and drinks off of their menu and we’ve reserved 3 bowling lanes at Jillian’s. The cost per person to bowl, which includes the cost of shoes, will depend on how many people sign up to attend. If we can confirm at least 24 people, we can have three lanes all to ourselves for two hours straight for less than $15 per person. The more we sign up, the less it’ll cost each of us. Since the cost can fluctuate slightly on the cost of bowling, we’ll be updating http://refreshindy.com as more people sign up.

All I ask is that you RSVP for this event no later than Monday, November 2 at 6 PM. Again, the meetup will be held on Wednesday, November 4 from 7 to 10 pm.

To RSVP, simply visit http://refreshindy.com and sign up. We’ll be posting the number of confirmed attendees as people sign up.

Again, thanks for your continued support. We’ll also be discussing plans for our next year at the November 4th meetup, including our future meeting location and projects.

Cheers,

Justin Harter

As I sit here waiting for a meeting I thought I would share some thoughts about SVN and some of the positives and negatives that I have had with using it.

In case you don’t know SVN is a very useful piece of software that you can download for free for PC (tortoiseSVN), and there are a few for Mac as well (SCPlugin). Versions is better for Mac but you have to pay for it. It is a great tool if you are building projects as a team or you work from several different locations and need to have a central location for all the files. Think of SVN as a central file sever for storing all the files for your projects. The special concept about SVN is that it will compare files, update files and delete/add files as needed according to your project needs all in one click of a button.

I know, your thinking I do that already with my hard drive or FTP’ing stuff to a server but what if there are two of you working on a file like an ActionScript file. Who overwrites who? How do you combine them without copy and pasting? Some SVN’s will do this easier than others but that is the point behind SVN is the ease of merging the file into one and only changing what has been changed and adding what needs to be added. That is probably confusing so let’s try this.

Say my colleague made some changes to a file late one night that I didn’t know about, and then I come into work and start working on the same file without knowing he made any changes to it. I could possible either screw up what he had done or just waste a lot of time writing code that he has already written. So in comes SVN. Now when I come into work the first thing I do is update my folder structure from SVN and grab all the changes that he has made. It will show me if a file has been changed and if it has I can merge the file with my old one, compare them to see what has changed, or just update the file and keep trucking.

It is a very powerful and useful tool, but there are some downfalls. I have used SVN inside eclipse and there has been some times where I have clicked on the unlock feature inside of SVN and it reverted all my data to the last revision that was saved on SVN.(that sucked) Then there are the times when SVN doesn’t like .fla files for some reason. If there are two of you working on one .fla then there might be a problem. The way around this is to make two versions of the same fla and when all the changes are done move all the movie clips to one and then save it.

For the most part SVN has been a great tool and it has saved me on more than one occasion. Like when you screw up your files and can’t figure it out, SVN to the rescue. Just revert your information to the last revision and Presto! your information is back to the way it was when you started.

I would highly recommend trying and using SVN for your projects and on the plus side most hosting servers have it now as a one click install so that is really nice and easy.

Try it out and have fun. Let me know what you think.
